It’s over now!

Maybe some of you were wondering if we survived the World Cup, because I haven’t written an article since the end of the first round. And the Soccer World Cup is already over now! I’m so sorry, but we were so busy with everything, and some days were surprisingly strenuous, that I didn’t find the time to write for my blog… But now I tell you how we experienced the rest of the World Cup!

Our day as spectators: Enjoying the Fan Walk and a match

Before we knew that we were successful as FIFA-volunteers we had already bought tickets for one match in Cape Town: Cameroon vs. Netherlands which for us seemed to be the most interesting match in the Green Point Stadium in the first round. This Thursday we had again a wonderful sunny and nicely warm winter day, and we enjoyed the Fan Walk and a good match.

The World Cup in a township: Mini World Cup in Mitchell’s Plain

During his “normal” life Brian, one of our FIFA-volunteer colleagues, is working with kids and young football players in the area he’s living in – Mitchell’s Plain. On June 16th, the South African Youth Day, he’d invited us to accompany him to the “Mini World Cup”, where 16 high schools were competing with each other, each representing one of the World Cup teams! It was a great experience for us where we’ve learned a lot about the youth in a townhip.

Back to earth – part two: Germany

No match is equal to the previous one – this soccer wisdom has come to truth again: After the impressive win over Australia the German “Nationalmannschaft” lost their second match. Serbia was a totally different opponent; for them it was a question of life or death. Fortunately we could only follow the first half of the match during our shift in the Stadium Media Centre.

Back to earth – part one: South Africa

After the enthusiasm which could be felt after the first match of the South African team we wanted to be part of the party which should take place after the second match. But people were brought back to earth: Bafana Bafana lost their second match, and they will need a lot of luck to survive the first round of the Soccer World Cup. We watched this match in the public viewing tent of the Paulaner Bräuhaus in the V&A Waterfront…

It is here: The World Cup has started!

Wow! What a perfect day was that Friday, June 11th! Perfect blue sky, nicest weather as a special welcome to the World Cup, and the first match in Cape Town took place in the evening. We had been waken up by Vuvuzelas blown in Hout Bay, and by workers or fans singing “Shosholoza” in the morning! As an answer we blew our own vuvuzela after breakfast…

Soccer World Cup starts tomorrow: The band begins to play!

Incredible! Only one day left to go until the Soccer World Cup in South Africa is starting with the first match in Johannesburg! The second match is taking place in Cape Town on the same day, on Friday, June 11th at 8.30 pm, and I will be on duty during that match!

On the road in South Africa…

Usually the road conditions in South Africa are good, similar to those in Germany. But some things are different, for example the signs…

Cars show the South African flag

Since a few weeks we’ve seen some funny stuff on some cars’ exterior mirrors. I had a closer look – and recognized the South African flag as a pull-over.
